India Decriminalizes Gay Sex
In Delhi, the capital city of India, a court today (July 2nd, 2009) ruled that consenting gay sex between adults is not a criminal act. The previous law, which is now overturned is a colonial law describing same-sex relationships as an “unnatural offence”. The court ruled that the criminalization of same sex intercourse was unconstitutional. Before this ruling, having gay sex could get you thrown in jail for up to 10 years. Indian society is still very homophobic and many people consider gay relationships illegitimate. Gay rights activists said the ban on same sex intercourse increased the rates of HIV transmission and made it harder to fight the disease. This ruling is being called India’s Stonewall. Congrats to India and it’s people for taking a step in the right direction.
