About The Gay Atheist

Monday, March 16, 2009 , Posted by Alex at 12:19 AM

The Gay Atheist was created on March 16th, 2009. It was created by Alexander Cheney. At the time Alexander or Alex as he prefers to be called was only 18. He had recently come out to his family as being gay. When he was coming out, Alex turned to the internet as a great source of strength. In the aftermath of Proposition 8 in California, Alex also became reattached to his love of politics. The world of politics at that time was alive.

The era of President George Bush was over and the first African-American President, Barack Obama had just been elected. Alex began to wonder where he could express his opinions, where he could air is voice. So one night he turned to the internet and created The Gay Atheist, with the original URL of “www.thegayatheist.blogspot.com.”

Alex wanted the blog to be a mixture of opinions, where a conversation would happen. While The Gay Atheist focused mostly on politics and particularly politics surrounding the gay rights movement it also began to spread out to cover various topics including entertainment and Hollywood.

At this time The Gay Atheist started experiencing growing pains. The basic blog layout didn’t fit the blog’s needs. So Alex uploaded a new layout and The Gay Atheist’s followers began again to grow.

Alex also started something new, he began updating live about events, such as when Marriage equality bills passed in Maine and New Hampshire.

As The Gay Atheist now had a daily readership, Alex purchased a new URL for the blog, www.thegayatheist.com.

The Gay Atheist had grown to a great point, but Alex thought in order to keep the conversation alive and growing he had to open the blog up to other contributors. This is when Alex put a call out for contributors and the online community responded. Alex added several contributors with different opinions, but all shared one common thing, they were either LGBT, some form of non-believers, liberals or any mixture. Alex is still looking for contributors today.
As of recently, Alex furthered updated The Gay Atheist to give it a more modern look. The Gay Atheist, a rock of logic in a tide of illogic!
